Do all nationalities need an ETA?

Yes. Since 2024 the ETA is mandatory for every foreign visitor before arrival, so it is best to apply online ahead of your trip rather than at the airport.

What documents do I need?

A passport valid for at least six months from arrival, a confirmed return or onward flight, your accommodation details and an email address to receive the approved ETA.

How long does the ETA take?

Most tourist ETAs are approved within a few working days. Apply in advance and we will email your authorisation once it is issued.

The tourist ETA allows a stay of up to 30 days with double entry, and can be extended in-country at the Department of Immigration in Colombo.

Can I extend my stay?

Yes. A tourist stay can be extended in Colombo, commonly up to a total of 90 and then 180 days, for travellers who want a longer holiday.
